Sterilization Protocol

At Orchard Hill Family Dentistry, keeping our patients and staff as safe as possible during these times is our top priority. From our state-of-the-art equipment to our decades of experience, we employ every one of our resources to create a clean and safe office environment and to mitigate the spread of germs using best practices.

Our team stays up-to-date with the latest guidelines from:

  • The Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)

Dental Tool Sterilization

CDC Guidelines require critical dental instruments to be sterilized after each use or discarded if sterilization is not possible. We use a dental autoclave machine, which kills germs on contact with direct, high-pressure steam and heat. This process ensures dental utensil sterilization between patient visits, so you know your teeth are being cleaned with a set of clean instruments.

Some dental tools cannot handle the high heat of our dental autoclave. For these instruments, we employ chemical and cold methods of sterilization. This involves immersing the instruments in a solution that completely sterilizes them over three to six hours. In following industry guidelines, we remove the instruments with chemical-resistant gloves, and to maintain top performance, the cold sterilization solution is changed regularly.

In addition to disinfecting our reusable instruments, we discard any disposable materials immediately following your appointment, and we always use a brand new dental examination kit for each patient. These instruments — which include mirrors, explorers, and forceps — remain sealed and sterilized in their packaging until they’re used on your teeth.

Dental Office Sterilization

Orchard Hill Family Dentistry builds in extra time between patient visits to disinfect the office environment. The surfaces listed below are cleaned by a hospital-grade disinfectant as recommended by the EPA to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses:

  • Dental chair, including seat, armrests, and headrest
  • Instrument tray and dental engine (chair-side appliances)
  • Countertops, light switches, and computer keyboards

From the front desk to the door handles, you can rest assured that we’re sanitizing surfaces regularly.

You can be certain that your dental treatments are conducted by knowledgeable staff with sanitized tools and clean water.

Dental Staff Hygiene

In keeping with ADA Guidelines, our team practices the utmost preventative measures to prevent the spread of germs. As veterans in the medical field, we’re adamant about hygienics and doing our part to keep our dental staff and patients from transferring harmful germs.

  • All personnel wears PPE (personal protective equipment) like gloves, face masks, scrubs, and protective eyewear.
  • Disposable PPE is thrown away between patients, while reusable PPE is laundered or cleaned on a daily basis.
  • Our staff employs thorough and frequent hand washing using antibacterial soap, plus regular use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

Whether you’re coming in for a routine check-up or an emergency visit, we prioritize your safety, now and always. Call Orchard Hill Family Dentistry today to schedule your appointment!
